BFF or Sworn Enemy? Skincare Ingredients That Pair-Up or Showdown.

When building a skincare routine consisting of multiple products, it’s important to know the facts on which ingredients help or hinder each other. You wouldn't throw a party and invite friends who don't see eye to eye, so make sure your skincare routine's ingredient party isn't ruined by an erroneus invitation! Read on for a nice overview of ingredient pairs to look for, and a few that should be avoided.

BFFs (Best Friends Forever!)

Retinol + Hyaluronic Acid: Moisture boosting superstar hyaluronic acid can help minimize any potential irritation initiated by retinol’s powerful anti aging properties. Retinol can penetrate hyaluronic acid, meaning it will remain equally effective. We’ve paired this effective duo in Aura Skin Retinol Night Cream.

Ferulic Acid + Vitamin E: Several studies (International Journal of Pharmaceutics, 2000 and

Anticancer Research, 1999) have shown that ferulic acid promotes stability of vitamin E when applied topically. Aura Skin Vitamin C Serum utilize this powerful pairing.

Vitamin A + Vitamin C + Vitamin E: Research has shown that these three ingredients work well together in anti aging skin treatments and remain stable when used together in a product. This trifecta of vitamins can be found in Aura Skin Retinol Night Cream and Aura Skin Vitamin Rich Day Cream.

Frenemies (Friend to you, but an enemy when paired incorrectly!)

Retinol + Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, or Benzoyl Peroxide: pairing retinol with any of these ingredients can lead to irritation, redness and peeling. No thanks!

Vitamin C + Glycolic or Salicylic Acid: These acids will break down the vitamin C in your products. Avoid this combo or risk losing out on the skin brightening power of vitamin C.

Serums + Cleansing Oils: Don’t apply a serum after using a cleansing oil on your skin: serums may not be able to penetrate the residue left behind by the oil.

A great skincare routine should be simple and not require heavy knowlege of tongue-twisting chemical names. We at Aura Skin strive to keep our ingredients list as legible as possible, where our goal is to ensure that our quality ingredients (you can wrap your head around!) deliver the results you expect. When we do feature key ingredients with more complex names, we will ensure to message through our blog, outreach, and clear directions on the box, what these actives accomplish for your skin.
